If you live in Newport Beach or nearby and you’re looking for a doula, a birth class or postpartum help, Looma Birth is worth a look. Elizabeth, a doula, is my contact there. I run OC Massage Therapy independently, so you’ll need to speak with Looma directly about their services and availability. Here’s what their Costa Mesa location offers, based on their published information.
What Looma Birth offers in Orange County
Their Costa Mesa page lists:
- Birth education and labor classes. This includes a Birth Education Bundle, preparing for labor with a partner, and workshops on the fourth trimester.
- Doula matching. Looma talks with you first, then matches you with a doula. Their birth doula page says you can be matched with Elizabeth or another team member, based on things like personality, budget, availability and location.
- Postpartum doulas. They offer day and overnight support.
- Prenatal yoga and movement classes. For other options, I’ve put together a guide to prenatal movement classes near Newport Beach.
- Community circles. The New Mama Circle, Baby + Me Yoga and Little Looma Club.
Their birth doulas focus on hospital births, and their Costa Mesa page lists Hoag Hospital Newport Beach and Hoag Hospital Irvine among the hospitals they visit often. They also say they have experience with birth centers and home births.
Why a doula can be worth considering
A Cochrane review of continuous support during childbirth found that this support may improve birth experiences and some outcomes, though the overall evidence quality was low. It wasn’t a study of Looma Birth, and it doesn’t predict how any one birth will go. A doula offers support alongside your doctor or midwife, not in place of them.
Before hiring anyone, I’d ask who will actually attend, what happens if that person is unavailable, and what’s included in the fee. Those answers are more useful than choosing from a list of services alone.
Where to find them
Looma Birth’s Costa Mesa studio is at 3185 Airway Ave, Suite E2, Costa Mesa, CA. Their phone number is (562) 548-1383. They also have a Long Beach studio. Ask them directly about current classes, availability and pricing, since those details change.
Where massage fits
My part is the massage appointment. I start prenatal sessions after 12 weeks and require your OB/GYN’s clearance if your pregnancy is high risk; here is how I approach prenatal massage. For after the baby comes, my postpartum support plan covers what to line up.
